I was on the prowl with my camera yesterday, hoping to catch a nice swallowtail or other pretty butterfly feeding on purple coneflowers, but nothing showed up. It was getting hotter by the minute in the full sun, when this drab little brown butterfly flittered along and lit in front of me. I think, “Okay, since you’re right there, I’ll take your pic.” I took a couple shots of it but the shadows were unappealing, so instead of using the XTi’s built-in flash, I hooked up my Sunpak 522 (potato masher) and took a couple test shots as I was shooting in manual mode. It was only after I transferred this image onto the computer that I realized I had held the flash in exactly the right angle to catch the iridescence on it’s wings, lighting up the colors that were invisible to me while taking the shot. Life is beautiful ~ and fleeting. Enjoy it’s surprises whenever you can!
